BEA Taps ILOG As A Preferred Business Rule Technology Vendor; Alliance Underscores Value of BRMS for Service Oriented Architectures

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – June 22, 2004 –BEA has designated ILOG® (NASDAQ: ILOG; Euronext: ILO, ISIN: FR0004042364) as a preferred business rule technology vendor to provide key functionality for its business process management (BPM) application development framework, the BEA WebLogic Workshop™. ILOG JRules™, a key offering in ILOG’s Business Rule Management Systems (BRMS) product line, was selected to help create faster business response times for WebLogic Workshop customers in finance, insurance, telecom and government markets as part of the combined solution. This is because ILOG JRules is designed to help eliminate the need to make business policy changes to a BPM application through traditional software coding — the common practice in most organizations – helping make it possible for customers to implement these changes more quickly.

BEA WebLogic Workshop is a full-featured Java development environment that is designed to enable information technology staff to more easily visually build and assemble enterprise-scale web applications, web services, JSPs, Portals, EJBs, and Process Workflows optimized for a service-oriented architecture (SOA). Using ILOG JRules integrated with the WebLogic Workshop framework, developers can create policy-based services orchestrated by BEA Workshop Process Workflow. Building services based on ILOG JRules can help enable a higher degree of reusability (an SOA Imperative) because business rules can be customized to fit different business processes and invocation contexts, and can also be shared across multiple applications/services.

BEA’s flexible BPM approach is different from what are called “pure play” BPM suites, because it can allow for the creation of tailored solutions through partnerships and integration with best of breed process analysis, content management, and now, business rules technology. The addition of business rule management to BPM is thought by some leading industry analysts to be critical for the success of BPM.

Research firm Gartner recommended that, “Business process management (BPM) provides significant benefits alone; however, when combined with business rules engines (BREs), it provides a great opportunity to gain and maintain favorable return on investment (ROI) and value of investment under a number of business scenarios.” Adding that, “at a minimum, enterprises should look for BPM technologies that employ externalized rules for agile business processes.”

“Organizations recognize that business change is constant, and accordingly, they must equip their systems with the flexibility to respond to changes rapidly and effectively,” said Scott Edgington, BEA vice president and general manager of worldwide channels and alliances. “We’re collaborating with ILOG because they have a strong commitment to standards and to the developer community; and because ILOG JRules help provide the enterprise scope and integration ease required by our BEA WebLogic Workshop customers.”

ILOG JRules is designed to integrate with BEA Workshop Process Workflow using a connector called ILOG Control, available free from ILOG and BEA.
