Paris, June 30, 2004 – Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced it has been selected by Belgacom International Carrier Services (Euronext: BELG), a division of Belgium’s leading operator, to expand and enhance their international voice transit network by using Alcatel’s next generation voice-over-IP enabled infrastructure.
The contract includes Alcatel’s softswitch and trunking gateway, which will be used to grow the network by approximately 40%. The contract also includes use of a new enhanced routing feature allowing Belgacom to continue providing optimal, competitive, and best in class traffic routing services for their voice customers.
Bridget P. Cosgrave, President of Belgacom International Carrier Services commented ” We wanted to upgrade and expand our current international switching platform, with minimal operational impact and safeguarding past investments. The Alcatel solution is designed to do precisely this, providing a seamless migration to NGN and continuous high quality services our customers have today. With this project Belgacom International Carrier Services proves once more its commitment to serving the carrier industry with innovative solutions”.
“Data traffic is significantly growing along with demand for new services giving operators a strong business case to migrate the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to a packet-switched NGN,” said Monika Maurer, president of Alcatel’s voice networks activities. “Alcatel is leveraging its installed base of switches throughout Belgacom’s international ‘presence’ network to offer a seamless, cost-effective migration solution which guarantees interworking between the PSTN and the new NGN while opening up also new business opportunities.”
Alcatel is providing its 5020 Media Gateway Controller together with the Alcatel 7510 Media Gateway ensuring full-featured voice support for the Alcatel 1000 installed base. It delivers the scalability and interoperability required by voice service providers, guarantees full feature continuity, and provides a low-risk entry solution for NGN deployments that complements the traditional TDM network. All Alcatel systems will be managed by the Alcatel 1300 Convergent Management Center (CMC).
These products are part of the Alcatel Open Path to Enhanced Networking (OPEN) portfolio of NGN solutions, a comprehensive set of standards-based building blocks. In addition, Alcatel will also deploy the Alcatel Enhanced Assistant for Routing which offers additional features to overcome routing limitations in data capacity and processing performance enabling Belgacom to better tailor its service offering.
