Paris, March 2, 2005 – Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) announced today that it has successfully deployed a VPLS solution for Zhenjiang Telecom, a local branch of Jiangsu Telecom, which is the second largest provincial subsidiary of China Telecom. This will enable Zhenjiang Telecom to offer a Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) solution to deliver high-quality Ethernet services for enterprises. Alcatel believes this is the largest VPLS network in China, with more than 200 customers from the medical, transportation, and retail markets. The project was won through and implemented by Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel’s flagship Chinese company.
Zhenjiang Telecom is using the Alcatel 7750 Service Router (SR) and Alcatel 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) to provide its customers with multipoint connectivity between corporate and subsidiary sites across the Zhenjiang metropolitan area. Enhanced service quality, bandwidth scalability and stability have improved the carrier’s efficiency and reduced its operational costs.
“The performance of Alcatel’s VPLS solution has proved very stable in our IP metro network which has been operational for six months,” said Liu Wenlong, CTO & Vice General Manager of Zhenjiang Telecom. “Because of the advanced features offered by the Alcatel solution we are now able to shorten the provisioning time of new VPN services by 60 percent. Their solution also assures high quality of service which is exactly what our customers are looking for.”
“We use an advanced point and click management capability that enables Zhenjiang Telecom to increase the adoption rate of new services through a better customer experience and faster provisioning of custom built services,” said Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel’s IP activities. “This successful deployment gives Zhenjiang Telecom a clear advantage in a highly competitive market and it reinforces Alcatel’s position in the Chinese IP/data market.”
The Alcatel 7750 SR is the industry’s first IP/MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) router designed and optimized for the delivery of advanced VPN services with scalability and flexibility. With a software and hardware architecture designed for efficient delivery of service level agreement based services, the Alcatel 7750 SR functions as both a powerful Internet router and a flexible service delivery platform. Together with the Alcatel 5620 SAM, the Alcatel solution enables rapid, scalable and manageable delivery of new-generation packet services.
As a next-generation service delivery platform, the Alcatel 7750 SR has already demonstrated significant traction among Chinese operators. Recently the solution was chosen by China Telecom to be deployed in the operator’s nationwide IP/MPLS network: ChinaNet2. It has also been deployed in the networks of all key China carriers including China Netcom, China Mobile and China Unicom.
VPLS is an emerging metro, national and global Ethernet service, extending a customer’s local area network (LAN) to multiple locations by providing fully-meshed Layer 2 multipoint connectivity. For service providers, VPLS leverages MPLS to enable a scalable, reliable and operationally efficient solution. For enterprises, VPLS leverages Ethernet to deliver a simple and cost-effective multipoint service with QoS support for different traffic types. Alcatel is an active participant in standards bodies and industry forums – such as the IETF, MEF and MPLS/Frame Relay Alliance – which have been instrumental in establishing VPLS standards and hosting multi-vendor interoperability tests for emerging IP/MPLS technologies and services.
