Lyon Police Force chooses Nokia TETRA deployed by AMEC Spie Communications

Improved security of communications one of the key drivers

The city of Lyon Police Force has decided to modernise their mobile radio communication network using digital TETRA technology and has just signed a contract with AMEC Spie Communications to deploy a Nokia TETRA system.

The TETRA system will provide advanced voice and data services for personnel in the municipal police of Lyon, making it possible for the Lyon Police Force to further improve their services to the citizens they serve and protect. In particular, the network will be used to secure large national and international events that are organised in the city of Lyon, such as G8, City-Net, Eurocités, and the annual marathon. The city of Lyon is the second largest city in France.

Under the terms of the contract, AMEC Spie Communications will deploy and maintain in operational mode a Nokia TETRA system, including a Nokia TETRA exchange, Nokia TETRA base stations as well as Nokia dispatcher workstations. The network deployment project has started, and it is estimated to be finished during 2022 2005.

“We are proud to provide the City of Lyon and its Police Force with the latest communications solutions to help them achieve their goals. ” says Benoit Loth, Senior Account Manager, Networks, Nokia. “In addition to our security solutions, another benefit for the customer is that TETRA is an open standard, designed for public safety use”.

“With the TETRA solution, AMEC Spie Communications can guarantee to the City of Lyon a continuous and evolutionary benefit from their investment. The City can later build on this platform and extend the communications services to new organisations, who also appreciate mobility, such as engineering departments, logistics services, and public landscaping and sanitation,” comments Vincent Magnon, AMEC Spie Communications.

Notes to the editors

TETRA technology is a world standard published by ETSI for digital mobile trunking networks. TETRA networks offer secure, digital mobile communication for professional organizations such as oil and gas companies, utilities, transportation and public safety and security sector (police, emergency, civil defence, security services, etc.). Data communication improves field operations by allowing users to access databases via their radios.
Most European countries have already chosen the open TETRA standard as the basis for their public authority radio networks, as have a number of countries elsewhere in the world.
TETRA technology minimizes the capital investments and the operational expenses of organizations because it allows simultaneous and independent use of a single existing network by many services, administrations and ministries. TETRA enhances the safety of classified information by using encryption of the connection. It also increases the effectiveness and the coordination of different services and ministries in crises and natural disaster situations through connecting independent Virtual Private Networks into one communication environment.
