Paris, March 21, 2005 – Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) announced today that it has been awarded two contracts for the installation of signaling and train control systems to modernize both the Komárom railway station, situated on the line which links Vienna to Budapest (TEN Corridor IV), as well as an 85 km line between Zalalövö and Boba which connects Budapest with Slovenia (TEN Corridor V).

These two contracts, valued at Euro 42 million, were awarded by MÁV, the Hungarian State Railways, to the consortium formed by Alcatel with Mávepcell, a major Hungarian civil works company.

Alcatel’s solutions will lead to improved railway services on these lines, which are strategic to the Hungarian network. The solutions will also enable better capacity utilization and an acceleration of international freight traffic, thus strengthening the economy along these railway corridors.

For both projects, Alcatel will supply, install and commission its modular Alcatel 6131 LockTrac (ELEKTRA) interlocking solution, providing reliable and safe train routing; it will also supply signaling outdoor equipment consisting of track occupancy systems, point machines, signals, level crossings and telecommunication equipment. For the Komárom railway station, Alcatel will also supply, install and commission its Alcatel 6413 AlTrac system, the Alcatel ERTMS/ETCS Level 1- compliant train control system enabling interoperable rail traffic within Europe, as well as point heating equipment.

The TEN corridor V is of strategic importance for the development of Hungary’s export business and the growth of tourism in this region. The modernization of the Komárom railway station is critical to enable high quality railway services on the most important line of MÁV’s network. MAV relies on Alcatel as a long-term partner to successfully complete these two challenging projects.

“Including these orders, Alcatel will have deployed 25 electronic interlocking solutions in the Hungarian railway network. These projects underline once again our commitment to help railway operators achieve their business objectives and reinforce our position as a provider of innovative signaling solutions for the Hungarian rail industry,” said Jean-Pierre Forestier, President of Alcatel’s Transport Automation activities.
