Alcatel and Cimcorp supply Gigabit Ethernet data infrastructure to Banco Central do Brasil

Paris, March 29, 2005 – Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) announced today it has been selected to supply advanced data infrastructure solutions and services to Banco Central do Brasil. Alcatel’s enterprise solutions represents a significant step towards the evolution of the autarchy’s network responsible for the traffic of critical applications such as the SPB (Brazilian Payments System) and the SISBACEN (Banco Central’s Information System), enabling applications that run in Banco Central (BC) headquarters in Brasília, and within its two largest regional representations located in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

A critical element in the deal was Alcatel’s certified business partner Cimcorp S/A, who will implement the Alcatel OmniSwitch 8800 and 7800, as well as the Alcatel OmniVista management platform. The solution is planned to go live by the end of the first quarter 2005. The Alcatel solution will deliver key embedded security services for wired and wireless infrastructures. As a result, Banco Central can maintain data integrity and confidentiality of information and financial transactions made by SPB, while delivering a future-proof solution via 10G Ethernet switches. Banco Central currently uses Alcatel ATM-based and Ethernet equipment for its data network. The agreement also includes support and maintenance services for the bank’s nine regional representations.

According to Marcelo Oliveira Yared, associate head and responsible for the project within Banco Central do Brasil, “it was crucial for us to deploy a network infrastructure with greater traffic speeds to accommodate video, data and voice, expanding our scalability. Banco Central is confident in Alcatel’s ability to offer advanced IP infrastructure capabilities to the corporate market, enabling Banco Central to have an advanced and flexible platform evolution.”

Lourinaldo Silva, enterprise solutions director for Alcatel in Brazil, affirms that, “the existent synergy between Alcatel and Banco Central do Brasil helped to advance their network capabilities, furthering the future of the most critical financial network in the country. The network availability, easy evolving capacity, administration and maintenance flexibility made Gigabit Ethernet the best choice for full converged architectures.”

“Cimcorp, together with Alcatel, addressed all Banco Central’s rigid network requirements, offering a single and complete solution to leverage the network to a new level of availability and speed,” said José Roberto Rodrigues, technology and partnership director of Cimcorp. “There are numerous possibilities for applications in a Gigabit Ethernet network, and Banco Central is prepared for 2022s with this newly advanced system to take on future technological trends.”

About Banco Central do Brasil
Banco Central do Brasil, Federal autarchy that integrates the National Financial System, was created in December 31st, 1964, with law nº4595 promulgation. With the functioning of Reserve Transference System (STR), in April 22nd, 2002, a new phase for Brazilian Payment System (SPB) took part. This system, operated by Banco Central do Brasil, made Brazil one of the countries able to make real time funds transfer between banks, in a irrevocable and unconditional manner. This avoid liquidation risk reduction (credit and balance risk) between bank operations, with consequent systemic risk reduction, where one bankruptcy can provoke other banks break, in the so called “chain effect”.
