Paris, July 25, 2005-Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that it has signed a contract with Cabovisão, a leading privately-owned cable operator in Portugal, to migrate its existing transport network infrastructure towards a multi-service network. Alcatel’s optical networking solution will enable Cabovisão to enhance the delivery of triple play services to residential users and offer new high-speed Ethernet services to enterprises throughout the country.

Cabovisão serves over 230,000 residential customers and 12,000 enterprises in Portugal. Alcatel’s solution will enable the cable operator to integrate new services into its portfolio. Cabovisão’s growing user base of small office, home office (SOHO) and medium-sized enterprises will benefit from innovative, carrier-grade metro Ethernet services such as Ethernet line and E-LAN (Ethernet Local Area Network) services, as well as traditional voice services. Furthermore, residential users will now enjoy enhanced triple play service delivery-including bundled voice, cable TV, and high-speed Internet access services-thanks to the high-speed broadband aggregation capabilities offered by the Alcatel solution.

“Over the past years, Cabovisão has progressively grown its subscriber base by offering its unique triple service offer in Portugal, of fixed telephony, cable TV and broadband Internet with competitive price conditions and to regions in the country, were those 3 services were not available yet”said Jorge Patrício, Marketing Director of Cabovisão. “Alcatel’s leadership in the multi-service optical segment and its compelling vision in technology innovation were our key criteria of choice to re-tool our existing network with advanced functionality and address the evolving needs of current customers and new markets.”

“Alcatel’s optical technology is aligned with Cabovisão’s need for a future-proof platform that enables them to further enhance broadband service delivery and end-user satisfaction,”said Romano Valussi, president of Alcatel’s optical networking activities. “This win reinforces Alcatel’s leadership in the fast growing global triple play market and confirms the key role of its optical networking solutions in ensuring triple play service delivery.”

Based on its Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) systems, the Alcatel solution will guarantee the delivery of all services over a reliable, easy to manage, converged optical-data platform. The scalability offered by Alcatel’s OMSN systems gives Cabovisão a future-proof infrastructure that can grow to support new services such as IPTV in line with end-user demands for IP services, thus achieving significant savings in capital expenditures. The network will be managed by the Alcatel 1350 management suite, which will minimize Cabovisão’s operational expenses thanks to streamlined network operations and fast end-to-end service provisioning and monitoring.
