Paris, September 20, 2005 – Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that it has signed a multi-million Euro contract to deploy its optical multi-service transport solution for the Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB) railway company in Switzerland. With completion scheduled in 2006, this implementation is part of SBB’s project to enhance its network capacity and enable new multimedia data communications services for video surveillance and train traffic interlocking between its 900 railway stations.
“SBB must rely on its 2,600 km long fiber network throughout Switzerland on communication services with the highest quality and availability,” said Frank Pulfer, Head of Engineering Telecom at SBB. “We selected Alcatel for its recognized expertise in optical networking, as well as in developing integrated communications solutions for the rail industry”.
The Alcatel solution is based on its optical multi-service node (OMSN) systems, including the recently launched 1642 Edge Multiplexer Compact (EMC), which will enable multi-service IP and time division multiplexing (TDM) communications among the railway sites. The new equipment will be managed by the Alcatel 1350 management suite.
Furthermore, Alcatel will be responsible for the installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of the optical networking project. These capabilities are part of Alcatel’s comprehensive service portfolio ranging from project integration and deployment to flexible maintenance solutions, business and technical consultation and targeted operational support.
“This project will provide SBB with enhanced network operational performance along with reduced maintenance costs,” said Romano Valussi, President of Alcatel’s optical networking activities. “Alcatel demonstrates once again that the reliability of its product and service portfolios offer a leading-edge platform to respond to the unique communications requirements of the rail sector.”
SBB is Switzerland’s biggest travel and transport company. Over 27,000 employees work around the clock to make the trains run safely and punctually. With 3,000 route kilometres and 320 million passengers a year, SBB is at the top of the European performance rankings.
