Paris, September 22, 2005 – Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) announced that it has equipped the first cross-border ETCS – European Train Control System- railway line linking Vienna to Budapest (TEN corridor IV), which is officially inaugurated today. This project is part of the European train signaling standardization program actively supported by the European Commission.
ETCS systems ensure the transmission of information from the track to the train along the whole line, enabling the on-board equipment to calculate and monitor continuously the maximum speed allowed. The implementation of interoperable ETCS on this cross-border line provides higher train speeds and a significant increase of the network capacity, while at the same time improving the line’s safety. This will allow both operators to enhance their services, and benefit from more sellable interoperable slots to railway undertakings.
Alcatel has been awarded by the national railway operators MAV from Hungary, as sole supplier (on-board and track side equipments), and ÖBB from Austria, as supplier for the track side part, contracts for the design, deployment and commissioning of ETCS Level 1 solutions including accompanying services such as data preparation and on-board equipment training.
“Today’s event marks a milestone in the deployment of a common European rail signaling system that makes cross-border traffic faster, cheaper and safer,” said Serge Tchuruk, Chairman and CEO of Alcatel. “Our leadership in signaling systems combined with our ability to develop and run mission critical systems, has put us in the right position to drive the standardization of ETCS and its market development from the beginning.”
Building on decades of experience in transport technologies, Alcatel is a world-wide leader in railway signaling systems. Today, Alcatel is involved in 15 out of the 20 major commercial ETCS projects in progress in Europe, and is currently supplying this interoperable European Train Control System to major railway operators in countries such as Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.
