CANTV selects Alcatel for Venezuela-wide Metro Ethernet network, setting the stage for triple play service delivery

Madrid, Spain, October 3, 2005 — Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that CANTV, the principal operator in Venezuela, has selected Alcatel to implement a nation-wide Metro Ethernet network. The Alcatel IP/MPLS solution is the foundation for CANTV’s next generation, service-aware aggregation network and provides the infrastructure CANTV requires for triple play service roll out. The network will be completed by November 2005.

CANTV will utilize the Alcatel solution to construct 14 rings across five cities, enabling the operator to introduce IP and Ethernet based services, such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for enterprises with differentiated service levels based on customer specifications. It also enables the operator to introduce triple play services including voice over IP, higher-speed Internet, broadcast TV and video-on-demand. In addition, as an aggregation network, the Alcatel solution optimizes capacity and efficiency for CANTV’s expanding portfolio of broadband services. Alcatel’s solution is based on the Alcatel 7450 Ethernet Service Switch and 5620 Service Aware Manager.

“Alcatel was selected because we required a best-of-breed solution that meets our needs for service delivery today and well into the future. We need the reliability and flexibility in the MAN in order to be confident that as our business expands for enterprise and triple play services, so can our network,” said Miguel Benatuil, Network General Manager of CANTV.

“CANTV’s deployment of the Alcatel solution is testament to its key attributes of high availability and ease of manageability, which are required to support the next generation of consumer and business services,” said Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel’s IP activities.
