Paris, October 24, 2005 – Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that it has signed a contract with State Grid Corporation of China, the largest Chinese power supplier, to deploy an optical multi-service backbone network enhancing mission-critical communications for nationwide power distribution. The project will enable more effective and reliable voice, data and multimedia services among the State Grid Corporation’s offices across China, while enhancing operational efficiency. The contract was won through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel’s Chinese flagship company.
With completion scheduled by the end of 2005, the optical multi-service network will deliver a high-capacity transport platform to support new demanding communication services in western China. Spanning 1,692 kilometres, the backbone will also connect to the other two main networks previously deployed by Alcatel for State Grid Corporation: one linking the provinces of Gansu and Chongqing through Sichuan and the other one connecting Hubei to Guangdong. As a result, the offices of the State Grid Corporation across middle, western and southern China will be able to operate in a seamless, reliable and more secure way.
Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel will install its data-aware Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) systems to link Gansu to Inner Mongolia through Ningxia. Their deployment will allow the State Grid Corporation’s employees to dramatically improve their work efficiency by using a wide range of advanced services such as supervisory control and data acquisition, video conference and other multimedia services. The network will be managed by Alcatel’s 1350 management suite.
“This is a very significant win for Alcatel, and is further evidence of our capability to deploy carrier-class communication solutions and services to enterprise and vertical customers,” said Romano Valussi, president of Alcatel’s optical networking activities. “We are proud to cooperate again with State Grid Corporation of China to help them further enhance their operational and service delivery processes.”
The new contract further strengthens Alcatel’s presence in the Chinese power industry segment where Alcatel has already installed its advanced optical networking solutions in over 20 provinces across East, West, Middle and South China, including the cities and provinces of Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guizhou and Guangdong.
