Commission on Kenyan elections

The European Commission notes with satisfaction the high turn-out at the elections, which shows that Kenyians are eager to consolidate and participate in the democratic process. Kenyans have clearly wanted to use their vote to have their say in the country’s future. The Commission is pleased how they have organized the preparations for the elections and have participated in the elections.
It is clear from the results as announced that the two main candidates have run a very close race. The final result shows that the incumbent President Kibaki and Mr Odinga both came very close to winning.

The Commission expresses its concerns about the alleged irregularities, as noted by the EU Electoral Observation Mission, and regrets that they cast doubt on the election results. It calls on all parties to use the appropriate juridical means to clarify these uncertainties.

The closeness of votes imposes a political responsibility on all parties, guided by their leaders, to work together in a spirit of unity such that the views of the electorate is reflected in the manner in which Kenya is governed. The Commission therefore calls on both parties to make every effort in order to get to an inclusive political solution. This would be in the best interest of Kenya as a nation.

Most importantly, the Commission emphasises that violence has no place in a democratic election. The Kenyan voters should persist in their desire for a peaceful and democratic future.
