Rueil Malmaison, 31 March 2008. The Group was awarded first prize in the Large Company category at the second Trophée National de l’Entreprise Citoyenne (National Awards for Corporate Citizenship) held on Friday, 28 March. The award was handed over by Isabelle Debré, Senator in the Hauts-de-Seine region and Gérard Merstrallet, Chairman and CEO of Suez and Chairman of the jury for 2008. The prize was given to the Group for its action led as part of Schneider Initiatives Emploi (Employment Initiatives).

For over ten years now, Schneider Initiatives Emploi (SIE) has been providing expertise to employees involved in the creation or take-over of companies. In particularly, it supports and strengthens the construction of the project (marketing, legal, financial, business and technical aspects), provides financial support and monitors the project for three years. A range of means and skills have been implemented to create lasting projects and the jobs they create. A network of skills is linked to these ambitions (Réseau Entreprendre, Management boutiques, ETCI, Alize, EGEE, etc.). Since the creation of SIE, 724 employees have become company heads which in turn have created 1,300 jobs.
Electricians, property managers, bakers, consultants, and graphics artists are only some of the varied, rich, innovative and passionate careers created.

“Our objective is to contribute to the success of this spirit of entrepreneurship and make it a reality, as well as ensuring the projects last over time. The success rate after the first three years is over 80%,” tells Philippe Theverin, head of Economic Development of the Territories in France, in charge of SIE. “This initiative also demonstrates Schneider Electric’s desire to play an active role in employment where the Group is present and contribute fully to the local economic development,” adds Gilles Vermot Desroches, Sustainable Development Senior VP and Chairman of SIE.

The National Trophy for Corporate Citizenship, under the patronage of Christian Poncelet, President of the Senate, awards French companies for their firm and original citizenship action which benefits employees, partners, and the women and men in their region or country.

1-Schneider Electric, involved in local development
In addition to supporting the creation or take-over of companies, Schneider Electric has developed a range of action which contributes to the development of the territories where the Group is set up.
>Insertion of young people
-Schneider Electric signed the apprenticeship charter to get companies to develop apprenticeships, as part of a specific mission assigned to Henri Lachmann by the Minister Jean-Louis Borloo. The system of alternating studies and work has more than 800 people coming into the Group each year.
-The operation “100 chances-100 jobs” involves 100 young people aged 18-30 per employment pool with low level qualifications from sensitive urban areas willing to commit to a professional insertion scheme.
The objective is to facilitate access to lasting employment via a customized qualification scheme with the support of 30 companies united and run by Schneider Electric, all within 30 months. The aim is to achieve 60% positive results, i.e. a fixed-term contract of longer than 6 months, a permanent contract, or qualification training. Five operations have been launched in Chalon-sur Saône, Grenoble, Rouen, Le Havre and Chambéry.
Integration of disabled workers in the company
Schneider Electric also leads an active policy of employment of disabled people. In 2007, Schneider Electric signed a Group agreement with the unions for 2007-2009, which for the first time includes all the company’s subsidiaries. This decisive step forward in diversity will encourage employment, training and professional integration of the disabled in compliance with the Law dated 11/11/05 for equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship. The ambitious objectives include reaching an annual overall (and legally required) minimum of 6%, taking on 45 alternating disabled workers and hiring 45 disabled employees over three years.
Sustainable association commitments
For ten years, the Fondation Schneider Electric has been supporting hundreds of children and young people in each country the Group is present in. The most ambitious projects combine financial, and human contributions, and proximity with the company’s business lines.
Every year, 70 projects are supported across France.

2-The Planet and Society Barometer: Measuring the performance in terms of responsibilities
This is an educational tool which aims to measure the Group’s performance in terms of responsibility vis-à-vis:
> employees, for instance by a 20% reduction in time off work caused by accidents on the job.
>environment, by making the certification of industrial and logistic sites a priority.
>society, by linking privileged and lasting relationships with associations close to the sites
>governance, by encouraging suppliers to join Global Compact.
All ten indicators that make up the barometer are updated every quarter and are available at www.barometer.schneider-electric.com
