Companies to Focus on Increasing Broadband Internet Access for Improved Connectivity
MIAMI, April 9, 2008 – Intel Corporation and Telefónica today announced an agreement to expand the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and broadband Internet access for consumers and businesses in Latin America.

Under the agreement signed today, the firms will collaborate on several initiatives aimed at offering more affordable technology solutions and services for home users and small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), along with increasing the quality of education to prepare students for the digital world.

The companies also plan to work together on how to complement Telefónica’s existing and planned broadband offerings with the deployment of IEEE 802.16e WiMAX networks in selected countries to bring people a faster, lower cost and wireless Internet experience. WiMAX is a broadband wireless technology that provides high speed for accessing large amounts of such data as movies and multi-media content on a variety of devices, including Intel-based notebooks.

“Through the joint efforts between Intel and Telefónica, we are expanding the possibilities for businesses in the region, but also accelerating the access to technology and a variety of connectivity solutions, providing more opportunity for improved communication, education and better quality of life,” said Ricardo Carreon, director of Intel Latin America.

The companies plan to develop computing and connectivity solutions for consumers that make it easier to access the Internet and take better advantage of its benefits, as well as collaboration in promoting and developing joint marketing actions. To help break down the technology barriers faced by many SMBs in the region, Intel and Telefónica plan to develop innovative ICT solutions and services that can minimize the risk of new technology adoption and deliver added value at lower costs. The ICT solutions would include Intel-based PCs and mobile Internet devices at a variety of price points, as well as broadband Internet access solutions from Telefónica that best suit the needs of local businesses.

Broadband Internet access, including 3G and WiMAX, will also be critical to the companies’ efforts to help bridge the digital gap and offer increased technology access to underserved communities in the region. In the Latin American market, the companies plan to equip children with ICT solutions that will help advance learning and development. Similar education solutions will be jointly developed for children undergoing long-term medical treatment and hospitalization in Latin America.

Intel, the world’s largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
