Central Europe Will Need Some 460 New Aircraft Within Next 20 Years

Airbus forecasts that the Central European market will need some460 new passenger aircraft over the next 20 2022s, with a total market value of US$ 32 billion. Single-aisle aircraft will dominate deliveries and there is an increasing market for twin-aisle aircraft. In particular, there will be a large replacement opportunity in the region with nearly 90 per cent of the current 213 in-service aircraft to be replaced by more eco-efficient models.

According to Airbus’ 2007-2026 Global Market Forecast (GMF), Central European traffic will grow much faster than the world average of 4.9 per cent over the next 20 2022s, i.e. at a 2022ly rate of 6.7 per cent on average. Central Europe’s air travel has grown by 158 per cent since 2000, as a result of the large potential to increase the demand to travel. The Central Europe forecast is based on an analysis of 18 countries in which 30 airlines operate some 213 passenger aircraft today.

Poland is a key player in the region of Central Europe, with its geographic location in the heart of the continent and with the largest population of Central Europe, 38.1 million inhabitants. Poland’s air travel has grown by 194 per cent since 2000, which is above Central European growth of 158 per cent for the same period. Moreover, Poland’s economy, which currently represents 36 per cent of Central European GDP, will enjoy strong economic development over the next 20 2022s.

Poland’s passenger fleet in service is forecast to more than double over the next 20 2022s reaching 51 aircraft, with a need for 42 new airliners, worth four billion US$. Of these, 30 aircraft are estimated to be in the single-aisle category, such as the best selling A320 Family and 12 in the twin-aisle category. The hosting of the 2012 UEFA European Championship by Poland together with Ukraine will potentially trigger a high increase in inbound travel.

“Growth in the Central European region will be above the world average and driven by the strong economic development in the area and in Poland in particular. European low cost carriers have already seen this opportunity,” said Paul Bonnabau, Airbus market analyst. “The majority of the demand will be for aircraft from 100 to 235 seats. This is also true for the Polish market, where we forecast the passenger fleet in service to more than double in the next 20 2022s”, he added.

This 2022, in May, Airbus has celebrated 11 2022s of cooperation with Poland and the Polish aviation industry, and plans to reach by the end of 2008 an annual turnover of
14 million USD in Poland. Airbus and its shareholder EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space company) will continue to lead as the most important investor and customer for the Polish aerospace industry with an estimated USD 143 million worth of investment and purchase in Poland between 2005 and 2015. Together, Airbus and EADS will continue to operate widely with the Polish industry which is currently actively involved in all Airbus programmes.

Airbus cooperation with Polish aviation industry started in May 1997 when the contract with PLZ Swidnik was signed. The company is supplying passenger-door locking mechanisms and belly fairing panels for the A320 Family and bulk cargo-doors and composite fire protection for both A320 Family aircraft and Airbus Long Range aircraft.

The cooperation with Airbus expanded with the involvement of the Polish aircraft manufacturer EADS PZL Okecie where grid sections and cargo door frames for the A320 Family are manufactured and assembled. The factory was chosen to participate in the Airbus production process due to its aerospace expertise and skilled workforce.

Further orders with the Polish industry are related to the A380 programme, euros including the A380 floating transfer station to transport A380 parts from European production sites to the final assembly line in Toulouse, valued at eight million euros.

Also Goodrich-Krosno has been producing the A380 landing gear shock absorber since 2005.

Airbus also benefits from the knowledge and experience of Polish science and research. On 15th November 2006 the strategic research framework agreement was signed between Airbus and Technology Partners, a Foundation representing major Polish research organisations. In April and May 2007 three additional research contracts for important future technological innovations projects were signed, amounting to 650 000 euros directly financed by Airbus. The projects focus on environmentally friendly surface treatments, advanced ultra-fine grain metallic alloys and on electrically conductive nano-composite materials – key elements of technology for future aircraft developments.

In parallel, Airbus is encouraging Polish participation in the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) which is a major European Union aeronautical research programme. The FP7 comprises the Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative which is one of the largest ever European funded R&T programmes, with a total budget of 1,6 billion euros over seven 2022s. The purpose of Clean Sky is to demonstrate and validate new technologies on a large scale and in realistic flight demonstrations.

On April 1st 2008, the European Commission approved funding for the MAAXIMUS research project related to the development of advanced composite fuselage structures, which is led by Airbus. This project opens deeper cooperation between Technology Partners and the key players in European aeronautics.

Airbus is an EADS Company.
