LNG regasification vessel sets sail from Singapore towards Brazil

The Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regasification vessel Petrobras chartered set sail from the Keppel shipyard, in Singapore, this Wednesday (06/11), at 7 AM (Brasília time), towards the LNG terminal, in Pecém (CE). The vessel is expected to arrive in the first half of July. While on course to Brazil, the vessel will receive, in Trinidad & Tobago, the first LNG load Petrobras purchased from the BG Group.

This is the world’s first methane vessel that was converted to perform the LNG regasification process on board. In addition to converting natural gas from the liquid to the gaseous state, it can also store LNG in its cryogenic tanks. The regasification capacity of the vessel, which is called Golar Spirit, is 7,000,000 cubic meters/day, and its storage capacity is 129,000 cubic meters of LNG, equivalent to 77,000,000 cubic meters of natural gas.

The Golar Spirit’s arrival in Brazil will mark Petrobras’ debut as an agent in the international LNG market. Brazil will receive its first LNG load next July at Petrobras’ terminal installed at the Port of Pecém (CE).

The LNG is transported at a temperature of minus 162ºC and regasification occurs on board the vessel. The gas is then injected into the gas pipeline system to supply, preferably, thermoelectric power plants.

Measuring 289 meters in length and 56 meters in height, the Golar Spirit was converted at the Keppel shipyard, in Singapore. The work, kicked-off in October 2007, was completed in record time. The regasification plant and the cryogenic equipment were built and assembled in the past eight months. These devices will be submitted to temperatures of 160ºC below zero.

The vessel’s arrival and the commencement of the regasification terminal operations will allow more flexibility and safety in the natural gas supply to both thermal and non-thermal markets.
