Avoid the ‘Digital Dump’

TVonics calls for telly fans to be environmentally aware

18th November 2008, Bridgend, South Wales – Energy Savings Trust approved TV set-top box manufacturer, TVonics has called on UK consumers to think twice before dumping their TVs. Despite the credit crunch it seems likely that another 8 million TVs could be sold this year as the UK moves to full digital broadcast and for every new television purchased one more goes straight to the dump. The environmental consequences are significant but this waste could be prevented – any old TV can be converted to digital for less than £40 and for a little more it can even record all the free digital channels.

European legislation means that all TVs (old style and flat panel) have to be recycled but it is a complex and expensive process. It makes much more sense, environmentally and financially, to use existing TVs until they reach the end of their natural life.

TVonics MD, Andy Carr, commented, “It’s just madness to throw away perfectly good TVs when they have plenty of life left in them. The enormous publicity around digital switchover has meant that many people now wrongly believe they have to upgrade their entire television to get all the digital channels from Freeview. They could save themselves a fortune, and save the planet at the same time. All that’s required is a small Freeview box and you can access up to 40 channels of free digital television on any old TV. And with a digital TV recorder they can even build a library of up to 250 hours of their favourite shows.”
