Paris, September 21, 2009 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE:ALU) and TIM, one of the largest mobile carriers in Brazil, have deployed an innovative packet transport solution for the metropolitan environment, the first of its kind in Brazil, enabling reliable, secure and cost-effective transport of existing 3G traffic and giving TIM the ability to smoothly transition to Long Term Evolution (LTE) to address evolving market demands when and as needed. Alcatel-Lucent’s end-to-end packet transport solution supports TIM’s plan to cost-effectively deliver high-speed Internet access and mobile broadband service offerings, including mobile TV, on top of traditional voice services to its customers.

The deployment of Alcatel-Lucent’s packet optical transport and microwave packet radio technologies in metropolitan areas delivers the high speed connectivity, network availability and backhaul capacity required by TIM to enhance its customers experience. In addition, this solution eliminates network complexity for minimized operational expenditures. Alcatel-Lucent also is providing comprehensive professional services including consulting, network design, project management, installation and commissioning as part of the agreement.

“The success of our 3G services is driving the demand for new and higher-speed services. To meet the resulting traffic growth, we needed to transform our infrastructure into a simpler network architecture ensuring cost-effectiveness and the highest quality in service delivery” said Marco Di Costanzo, Network Director of TIM Brasil. “With Alcatel-Lucent’s state-of-the-art packet transport solution, we evolve profitably towards the next generation of wireless broadband, while preparing for LTE and WiMAX-based services.”

The Alcatel-Lucent managed solution is based on its 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS) and 9500 Microwave Packet Radio (MPR), which are part of the Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture (META), implementing innovative features like T-MPLS and service driven adaptive modulation. The solution optimizes traffic transport and aggregation from the base stations to the core network handling multiple traffic types onto the same platform. Additionally, it automatically allocates the appropriate bandwidth to ensure services are delivered according to the required quality.

“Helping our customers to effectively transform their networks is critical to help them generate more profitability and better service experience for their end users,” said Osvaldo Di Campli, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in the Caribbean and Latin America region. “The deployment further strengthens our relationship with TIM globally and confirms our innovation and execution capabilities.”
