JavaFX Platform is the Official Rich Client Technology for the 2010 Winter Games

Expressive Java technology emerges as a true game-changer for how sport fans explore medal results online
Redwood Shores, Calif. – February 9, 2010
Oracle today announced that JavaFX(TM) and Java(TM) platforms are being used as the Official Rich Client Technology by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). Sport fans around the globe can now explore the historical Winter Games medal results through an innovative JavaFX application, Medal Wheel, available at http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-medals/geo-view/.

During the XXI Olympic Winter Games Vancouver2010.com, the official Web site of the 2010 Olympics, is expected to be one of the world’s busiest Web destinations, attracting more than 1.5 billion hits. The Medal Wheel application enables users to examine Olympic Winter Games results from Chamonix 1924 to Vancouver 2010 in an engaging, intuitive environment. A highly graphical user interface encourages exploration of the history of the Olympic Winter Games by providing dynamic visualizations of medal results for countries, sport disciplines, and athletes. Additionally, the JavaFX Results Ticker widget, available on February 12, 2010, will enable sport fans to follow the 2010 Winter Games’ medal results as they happen directly from the convenience of their desktop.

“The 2010 Winter Games is Canada’s time to shine, a time to show the world who we are and what we can do,” said David Marshall, Director, Internet Systems, VANOC. “JavaFXTM technology has enabled our team to create a rich visual experience of the Winter Olympics medal results that’s truly immersive. When the games are over, the ability to present results through an innovative visual interface will be one of VANOC’s legacies.”

“The JavaFX platform delivers a compelling mix of ubiquity, expressiveness and performance that enables web content developers to strongly differentiate their applications,” said Jeet Kaul, vice president, Client Software Group, Sun. “VANOC’s use of JavaFX technology to create an unparalleled user experience confirms its position as a leading contender among rich client development platforms.”

VANOC is among the growing number of leading-edge organizations turning to JavaFX for expressive, feature-rich applications that leverage the power of Java(TM) technology. Responding to the interest from application and content developers as well as solution providers, Sun has created the JavaFX Partner Program that provides tools, training and support to facilitate the creation and deployment of rich client applications with the JavaFX platform. More details about the Partner Program can be found at www.javafx.com/partners

The JavaFX technology at the 2010 Winter Games is an extension of the company’s ongoing VANOC relationship. Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc. is the Games’ Computer Network Server Supplier. As a Tier III sponsor, the company is supplying Sun server and storage infrastructure and installation support for the critical applications used by VANOC before and during the 2010 Winter Games.
