200 millionth DSL line deployed by Telefónica to support cost-effective delivery of innovative service packages over VDSL2

Paris, March 4, 2010 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that Telefónica is receiving the 200 millionth digital subscriber line (DSL) shipped by Alcatel-Lucent – a unique and important milestone for the DSL industry, demonstrating the company’s ongoing leadership in this space.

“DSL has been the engine behind the broadband/Internet revolution, and is connecting approximately 2/3 of today’s broadband users around the world,” said Dave Geary, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s wireline networks activities. “Alcatel-Lucent is extremely proud to be the only vendor to have passed this important milestone. And this is not the end point: we are committed to keep on innovating in those technologies that drive our customers’ future growth and profitability. VDSL2, GPON, developing the next generation of DSL/fiber flavors and increasing the application enablement capabilities of the access network are a focal point of our activities.”

“We continue to support our customers to provide the highest value at the lowest cost per bit, in line with Alcatel-Lucent’s High Leverage Network™ architecture,” Geary added.

Alcatel-Lucent’s 200 millionth DSL line shipped is a VDSL2 line that will be part of Telefónica’s global network transformation project. Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 technology enables Telefónica to offer to its customers a wide array of advanced services. Telefónica’s network transformation project thus takes advantage of the latest technical innovations while making the most of past investments and leaving room for growth – since today’s VDSL2 technology from Alcatel-Lucent can support superior speeds.

To note this unique and significant milestone, Jürgen Lison – Vice President of Alcatel-Lucent’s fixed access activities – presented a gold-plated VDSL2 line card to Vicente San Miguel – Telefónica’s CTO – during an official ceremony in Madrid. “Building on DSL technology, Telefónica has developed pioneering and innovative services for its customers in Europe and Latin America in the last 10 years. Looking to the future, Telefónica and Alcatel-Lucent have to continue to innovate – while leveraging to the largest extent the value of existing copper infrastructures,” said Vicente San Miguel, Telefónica’s CTO. “This commemorative line card will get a prominent place in our headquarters, being a testimony of the deep and longstanding partnership between Alcatel-Lucent and Telefónica.”

Building on its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) family of IP broadband access products, Alcatel-Lucent leads the DSL space on a year-to-date basis – according to Dell’Oro’s latest Access Report*. New public ISAM wins include Fastweb (Italy, DSL), SaskTel (Canada, VDSL2), South Yorkshire Digital Region (UK, VDSL2) and Telekom Austria (Austria, VDSL2). Today, one out of three fixed broadband subscribers around the world is served through an access network provided by Alcatel-Lucent.
