Bloxx Redefines Email Filtering to Address User Productivity

Industry’s first email filter incorporating Tru-View Technology that enables organisations to identify and manage personal email and deliver superior protection

27th April 2010 – Bloxx, the innovator in Web and Email Filtering, today announced the launch of the Bloxx Email Filter, the industry’s first email filter that enables organisations to effectively identify and manage non-business email. Industry research shows that up to half of filtered email received by business is either spam or personal, so the impact of staff reading and responding to personal email can be distracting and could have a significant impact on staff productivity.

The email filtering appliance incorporates proven multi-layered spam and AV engines, but adds a unique categorisation engine that analyses emails to deliver unsurpassed protection against traditional email threats such as spam, phishing and malware. This categorisation engine, powered by Bloxx Tru-View Technology, uses URL information from the email to identify if the email is business or personal. Once categorised, the organisation’s email policy for a workgroup or individual determines if the email should be blocked, delivered or held for future delivery.

“Our research on email behaviour showed that 96%[1] of respondents send work-related emails on a daily basis, and 76%[2] send personal emails every day. Email clearly has the potential to be disruptive with the majority of users, 84%[3], keeping email running in the background at work while almost half (49%[4]) always use alerts to notify email arrival. However, I believe that an outright ban on personal emails may well be counter-productive,” said Dr Karen Renaud, Computer Scientist at the University of Glasgow and a leading expert in this field. “It is much better to proactively manage personal email usage and to make employees aware that reasonable personal use is permitted but that this is a privilege which can be withdrawn should it be abused. Using an email filter that can identify and manage personal email may well be an effective way of encouraging employees to deal with the bulk of their personal email during their breaks.”

“Organisations are drowning under a Tsunami of email and now desperately need a way to ensure that non-business emails are identified and managed effectively to minimise the impact they may have on staff productivity, “ said Eamonn Doyle, Bloxx Chief Executive Officer. “The Bloxx Email Filter not only provides outstanding levels of protection against spam and malware, but builds on this to provide businesses with a way to ensure that personal emails are managed appropriately.”

With the Bloxx Email Filter organisations can quickly create and manage an email Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for personal email, allowing employees to use email to its full potential without the added stress, strain and related productivity issues. This capability means that for the first time organisations now have an effective way to create and manage policies for both web and email usage.
