Capgemini’s Merlin Wins Green Data Center Award

Paris, London, 8 February 2011 – Capgemini, one of the world’s foremost providers of consulting, technology, and outsourcing services, has been recognized at the UK’s DatacenterDynamics Leaders Awards 2010 for its new Merlin data center, voted the best green data center in Europe.

The Merlin center opened in October 2010 as a state-of-the-art development that sets new standards in sustainability and energy efficiency in response to concerns about the global impact of IT on the environment.

The judging panel comprised 25 CEOs, IT directors, engineers and environmental experts from companies and organizations such as Tesco, Computacenter, Dell, Fujitsu, Morgan Stanley and the British Computer Society. The experts agreed that Merlin demonstrated outstanding success in balancing the need for high performance with the achievement of measurable environmental and sustainability objectives.

Advancing IT Sustainability
The award was presented at a ceremony in London in December 2010 to David Fitzpatrick, Vice President of European Infrastructure Outsourcing at Capgemini. He said: “The Merlin center embodies Capgemini’s approach to sustainability, with significant energy savings translating into added value for our clients. I am delighted that the Group has been recognized for this highly re-useable, recyclable, energy-efficient and price-competitive data center.”

Paul Anderson, Program Director at Capgemini UK, who had overall responsibility for the Merlin project, said: “We had great confidence in the Merlin center’s potential for advancing IT sustainability. It is therefore very rewarding to receive independent confirmation from some of the world’s top experts in the field.”

Global Data Center Portfolio
The new Merlin facility is a key component of Capgemini’s Global Infrastructure Outsourcing (GIO) strategy which has invested €100 million across a global data center portfolio of 25 facilities in Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the United States, as well as the UK. Capgemini’s GIO supports over 26,000 physical servers of which 8,000 are virtualized. Capgemini’s key focus is on data center optimization to respond to clients’ demands for security, sustainability and cost efficiency.

Three other Merlin-related Capgemini entries in the DatacenterDynamics Leaders Awards 2010 were highly commended by the judges. The Capgemini entries were finalists in the Innovation in the Mega Data Center, Data Center Operational Team of the Year, and Data Center Business Leader of the Year categories.
