Last updated: October 21, 2026
Over the past 52 weeks, the Transgene share price has moved between € and €. As with every clinical-stage biotech, the range is wide: a data release or a competitor announcement can move the stock by more than 20% in a single session.
Transgene at a Glance: Viruses Put to Work for Immunotherapy
Founded in 1979 in Strasbourg, Transgene is one of the oldest French biotech companies. Its historical expertise is viral vector engineering: using modified, harmless viruses as « vehicles » to carry instructions into the body and stimulate the immune system against cancer cells.
The company relies on two technology platforms. myvac® produces personalized therapeutic vaccines from an MVA-type viral vector. Invir.IO® designs oncolytic viruses, capable of selectively infecting and destroying tumor cells while arming the immune response.
Transgene has no marketed drug. Its operating revenue comes mainly from the French research tax credit and, from time to time, from partnerships. The value of the stock therefore rests on the future potential of its clinical pipeline and on its ability to fund that pipeline through to the decisive milestones.
Four families of events explain most of the moves in TNG stock:
- Clinical data: trial results, conference presentations (ASCO, ESMO, SITC), scientific publications. These are the most powerful catalysts, in both directions.
- Cross-readings: a competitor’s results on a comparable approach can validate — or undermine — an entire category.
- Funding: cash levels, funding horizon, potential capital increases and support from the majority shareholder.
- Partnerships: a licensing deal with a major pharma group brings both money and external validation.
A recent example illustrates the power of cross-readings. According to Biomed Impact, the stock gained as much as 21% on the day on August 19, 2026, when Moderna and Merck announced positive Phase 3 data for their personalized therapeutic cancer vaccine — an approach close to that of TG4050. Our page on buying Moderna stock covers this player.
TG4050: The Personalized Vaccine at the Heart of the Story
TG4050 is the first personalized therapeutic vaccine to come out of the myvac platform. For each patient, the tumor is sequenced, and neoantigens — mutations specific to that cancer — are selected using artificial intelligence. They are then loaded into a viral vector manufactured specifically for that patient, to train the immune system to recognize tumor cells.
The product is being evaluated in a randomized Phase 1/2 trial (NCT04183166) in patients with HPV-negative head and neck cancers, given after surgery as adjuvant treatment. The goal: prevent relapse and extend remission in patients at high risk of recurrence.
What the Published Data Show
In Phase 1, TG4050 met all of the study’s objectives and induced durable, neoantigen-specific immune responses. According to the company, every treated patient was relapse-free at two years. A detailed analysis was published in January 2026 as a preprint on medRxiv. The three-year relapse-free survival data, released in 2026, were deemed positive by the company.
A sense of proportion is needed, however: Phase 1 involved a small number of patients. Only the randomized Phase 2, which compares patients vaccinated immediately with those who receive the vaccine only upon relapse, can demonstrate a robust benefit.
The Calendar to Watch
- Late 2026: first immunogenicity data from the Phase 2 part, with a conference presentation indicated for the first half of 2027.
- No later than the end of Q1 2028: primary Phase 2 results, on two-year relapse-free survival.
Randomization of Phase 2 patients has been complete since spring 2026. The 2028 result will be the moment of truth for the program: it will shape the rest of development and the interest of potential partners.
The Rest of the Transgene Pipeline: TG4070, BT-001 and New Avenues
Beyond TG4050, Transgene aims to demonstrate that myvac is a platform applicable to several cancers, not a one-product story.
- TG4070: the second vaccine to come out of myvac, now in Phase 1 in non-small cell lung cancer.
- BT-001: an oncolytic virus from Invir.IO, co-developed with the Swedish biotech BioInvent. After data presented as positive in October 2025, the remainder of the trial would be carried forward by an academic investigator, according to Biomed Impact.
- New oncolytic viruses: preclinical data are due to be presented at the SITC 2026 congress.
- A prophylactic vaccine: a candidate against mpox and smallpox broadens the portfolio beyond oncology.
Transgene has also developed its own neoantigen-selection artificial intelligence, called SNIPER. According to Biomed Impact, it reduces reliance on NEC’s technology for future vaccines and would allow Transgene to keep the full value of these new candidates.
The Transgene NEC Partnership
TG4050 was designed using NEC’s neoantigen prediction system, built on more than twenty years of the Japanese group’s expertise in artificial intelligence. In early April 2026, Transgene and NEC Bio signed a licensing agreement to continue the clinical development of TG4050 in head and neck cancers.
The agreement secures Transgene’s access to NEC’s platform and the rights needed for development, commercialization and deal-making. In return, Transgene issued €2.5 million in new shares, and will pay €2.5 million in cash in several installments through early 2028. NEC may receive further payments depending on clinical progress.
For shareholders, this payment in shares is a concrete example of dilution, however modest: the number of shares rises, and each share represents a slightly smaller slice of the company.
Transgene Results and Cash Runway
Transgene published its half-year results in late September 2026. The key figures, according to the press release and Biomed Impact’s commentary:
| Indicator | Value | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Operating revenue (mainly French research tax credit) | €2.9m | H1 2026 |
| Net result | -€15.7m | H1 2026 |
| Cash and financial assets | €92.8m | June 30, 2026 |
| Cash and financial assets | €111.9m | December 31, 2025 |
| Net cash consumption | €8.1m | Q1 2026 |
| Announced funding horizon | early 2028 | — |
The half-year loss is slightly smaller than in 2025, thanks to lower research expenses. The cash position may look comfortable against the announced horizon, but burn should increase as TG4050 ramps up and TG4070 gets underway.
The key point: the Transgene cash runway extends only to early 2028 — roughly to the primary Phase 2 results. Additional funding, whether a partnership, a capital increase or support from the main shareholder, will probably be needed beyond that.
How to Read a Transgene Press Release
The press releases of a clinical-stage biotech are dense. Four questions are enough to extract the essentials, whether it is a quarterly update or a data announcement.
- How many months of cash? Divide cash by quarterly burn, then compare with the company’s announced horizon. A wide gap signals a planned acceleration in spending.
- Is the timeline being kept? A milestone confirmed on schedule is reassuring; a delay of even a few months often weighs on the stock.
- What is the endpoint? An immune response is not a clinical benefit. Only relapse-free survival, measured against a control group, demonstrates efficacy.
- How many patients? Results from around ten patients remain fragile, however spectacular.
Finally, tell data published in a peer-reviewed journal apart from preprints and conference presentations: the level of scrutiny is not the same. Press releases also carry a forward-looking statements section, a reminder that future results are never guaranteed.

For a biotech with no revenue, classic ratios such as the P/E ratio are meaningless. The metrics that matter are cash, quarterly burn, the funding horizon and enterprise value — that is, market capitalization minus net cash.

Analyst Consensus on Transgene Stock
Analyst price targets on a biotech rest on probabilities of clinical success and discounted assumptions of far-off sales. They can vary widely from one research house to the next and change abruptly after a data release.
Transgene Stock Dividend
Transgene does not pay a dividend. The company has no commercial revenue and burns cash to fund its clinical trials: any payout is off the table until it has a product on the market or significant licensing revenue.
The stock can therefore only deliver a potential capital gain, tied to the success of the clinical pipeline. It is for investors willing to wait several years and to accept a substantial risk of capital loss.
The Institut Mérieux, a family-owned healthcare group based in Lyon, is Transgene’s majority shareholder, with most of the capital. It has backed the company several times, notably through shareholder loan advances.
This presence cuts both ways. It reassures on the stability of the shareholding and the company’s ability to fund itself. But it shrinks the float — the share of stock actually traded on the market — and makes an offer from a third party without Mérieux’s approval unlikely.
Competitors and the Cancer Vaccine Landscape
The field of personalized therapeutic vaccines has enjoyed renewed interest since results from US players using messenger RNA technology. Transgene stands apart with its viral vector approach, which aims for a strong and durable immune response.
Competitors include both Big Pharma groups and specialized biotechs. Positive data from a rival validate the category, but also sharpen competitive pressure: arriving later on the market with a comparable product reduces the commercial potential.
Among French biotech stocks listed in Paris, Cellectis stock represents another take on immunotherapy, built on genome editing and CAR-T cells. Our guide to investing in biotech stocks explains how to compare these very different stories.
Is Transgene a Good Investment in 2026?
The bullish arguments are identifiable: a personalized platform with clinical proof of concept, a category validated by competitors, a solid anchor shareholder, cash covering needs through the Phase 2 results, and proprietary AI that strengthens its independence.
The risks are just as real:
- Clinical risk: Phase 2 may fail to confirm the Phase 1 results.
- Funding risk: new capital raises could dilute shareholders.
- Industrial risk: a vaccine manufactured for each patient poses cost and lead-time challenges.
- Competitive risk: more advanced and better-funded players could dominate the market.
- Timeline risk: the decisive results are not expected until 2028.
Transgene stock therefore belongs to a speculative sleeve, to be sized with care. A sensible approach is to cap the position size, build it in several tranches and track the publication calendar closely. Past performance is no guide to future performance.
How to Buy Transgene Stock from France
- Identify the stock: Transgene, ticker TNG, ISIN FR0005175080, listed on Euronext Paris.
- Choose the wrapper: as a French company, Transgene is eligible for the PEA, the French equity savings plan, which exempts capital gains from tax after five years. A standard securities account, by contrast, lets you offset a potential loss on the stock against other gains — worth weighing on a stock this risky.
- Compare your broker’s fees for small orders.
- Place a limit order: brutal swings are frequent, and our guide to stock market orders details the options for controlling the price you pay.
- Mark the calendar: Phase 2 immunogenicity data in late 2026, scientific congresses, half-year and full-year results, then Phase 2 results no later than early 2028.
CFDs and other leveraged products magnify gains and losses alike. On a biotech prone to price gaps around data releases, they are especially risky and cannot be held in a PEA.
