What Are UCITS Funds (OPCVM) – Definition
UCITS funds definition: In French market vocabulary, OPCVM means UCITS funds. A UCITS fund is a financial entity that manages an investment fund dedicated to stock and bond investments, and it is the standard for mutual funds Europe-wide. OPCVM is the French acronym for Organisme de Placement Collectif en Valeurs Mobilières, a body regulated by the AMF. It is one of the products you absolutely need to know before getting started in the stock market.
- In practice, this collective investment vehicle gives investors the opportunity to make investments that are normally hard to access. For example, companies or individuals can invest in financial markets, money markets, or unlisted shares through UCITS funds.
- UCITS funds are responsible for raising funds while issuing financial securities for different actors. These can be individuals, companies, or other agents. But the main objective of a UCITS fund remains the acquisition of financial assets.
- Note that UCITS funds can have two modes of organization: as a SICAV or as an FCP. SICAVs, or sociétés d’investissement à capital variable, are the UCITS funds that have boards of directors.
- As for the FCP organization, or Fonds Commun de Placement, these are UCITS funds that do not have legal personality. These UCITS funds have the status of co-ownership. In general, these vehicles were created at the instigation of a management company and a custodian bank.
- If you want to invest in UCITS funds, you simply need to choose a broker that offers organized investments. Moreover, this financial intermediary now offers reduced fees.
